RGS Application Servers
The RGS Application Servers allow users to run high-end graphics-intensive applications remotely from their own computer or from a CAEDM Windows computer.

From a CAEDM desktop PC, simply click on the HP RGS/SAM Client icon on the menu and login with your CAEDM username and password.

In order to log in from your own computer, you will need to do the following:

  • Download the current RGS/SAM client installer, and install it on your computer. If you get a message about the page not existing, copy and paste this URL: http://www.et.byu.edu/caedm/rgs/
  • Simply login using your CAEDM username and password - you will automatically be connected to the RGS Application Server.
  • Off-campus access is not currently supported.
  • On-screen collaboration is possible with multiple users. Click here for instructions

RGS - Remote Graphics System - Powerful, high-end graphic workstation.
SAM - Session Allocation Manager - Manages connections from clients to the RGS Workstations.

If you receive an error stating "Failed to create process default activation context," you will need to install the .NET framework from Microsoft.
If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7, you must either disable UAC or run the SAM/RGS Client as an Administrator.

What are the CAEDM RGS servers?

The RGS Servers are high-performance graphics servers that are specially designed for CAD rendering and other graphical applications that require a lot of processing and rendering. CAD applications like ProE and Catia can be found locally on these computers.

Since these machines are not physically in the the CAEDM labs, you access them remotely using the HP Session Allocation Client.

Starting a session

To begin a session on one of our RGS servers use the CAEDM SAM Client program. It can be accessed by clicking on “Start” and then “HP Session Allocation Client”. To begin a session with the default settings, simply make sure that your user name is filled in correctly and put your password in the password box. Also, ensure that the box labeled “Domain” says “CAEDM_AD”.

For the most part, the default session should be adequate for your needs. However, if you are operating on restricted bandwidth or have special needs, the Session Allocation Client has some customization options available.

Options
The RGS Session Allocation Client has many customization options available. To access the options, click on the “Options” button in the lower right-hand corner of the client. The major options of each category are detailed below.

Display
In the display option, there are many setting you can change to your liking and needs. By default, the SAM Client will open an 800x600 Desktop with 24 bit color. These options can be changed to fit your screen size.

If you are operating under limited bandwidth, you can lower the screen resolution and the color depth to achieve better performance.

Image quality is the quality at which your client will render the desktop being displayed. By default, it is set at 65%. Higher image quality will result in a clearer picture, but requires more network bandwidth.

The Full Screen option is not enabled by default. Checking this box will make the client desktop fill your current screen. You will have to log out, restart the client, and disable full screen mode to disable this option once logged in.

Audio
Audio can also streamed from your RGS session to your computer. By default, Audio will be streamed at “Medium” quality in stereo sound. To increase speed in limited bandwidth sessions, you can check the box “Mute sound” to disable sounds, or lower the quality of the audio. You can also enable a microphone for use in your session.

Keyboard
The Keyboard will be used when the RGS desktop is the window you are working in. If you are using the RGS Client in full screen mode, your keyboard will function normally. Here, you can also configure whether keyboard shortcuts using the windows command key should work on your local computer or in the RGS session.

Devices
Devices will map local disk drives, printers, serial ports, smart cards, and USB devices to the RGS session if checked. The Clipboard can also be synced from here as well. By default, only printers, smart cards, and the clipboard are mapped.

Save Settings
Once you have your session setting customized, you can save them in a file for later use. Click this to save your options to a file for future use.
